(Hayashi) Speaking of which, I recently had an inquiry from a lady who attended the workshop in Akita.
(Saito) What! Really? Which one? Spring scissors case or sewing box?
(Hayashi) It's about the sewing box. She complimented me on how nice it was and asked me which book it was in, so I told her it was introduced in "Patchwork Pattern 156."
(Saito) Oh, really. It's very easy to use.
(Hayashi) Please show me inside, teacher.
(Saito) This size is just right to fit scissors.
(Hayashi) Just as you said, there are many scissors in it. (laughs)
(Saito) That's right. It really does fit in there. (laughs) It's just right to fit scissors with long blades. That's why I made it. It's very easy to use because it was made to fit things like this. It's made from fabrics, so it's fine even if it's pressed down on. There are needles in this pocket.
(Hayashi) I'm sure everyone is very curious about what's in your sewing box, including me.
(Saito) Oh, really? The content isn't cute, is it? It isn't not stylish. But it is practical.
(Hayashi) Yes, it does seem practical.
(Saito) It's not cute, but it's filled with all the things I need. People overseas have been really interested in it too, asking to see what's inside and take pictures. In France and Italy too.
(Hayashi) Is that so? I'm glad to hear that. However, this practical feel may be what makes it more interesting. Finally, is there anything we should be careful about when using scissors?
(Saito) Do not open and close the scissors unnecessarily.
(Hayashi) The point is not to test the sharpness unnecessarily, right?
(Saito) That's right. In short, the reason why I use different scissors for cutting threads and fabric is because cutting threads with fabric scissors, which have a long blade, can damage the blade.
(Hayashi) That's right. We only use the tips of the scissors.
(Saito )Yes. To cut just a little bit of thread, you have to move the long blade, which means that you are not cutting anything, and the sharpness of the blade gets worse. So, when you need to cut a piece of thread, you should use a short blade. It is important to use these tools for different purposes. The most important thing is not to lend them to others!
(Hayashi) What? You don't lend them to others?
(Saito) (Laughs) It has its own quirks, so you really shouldn't lend it to others.
(Hayashi) I see (laughs)
(Saito) But you know, I always say, "Can I borrow it for a bit!" but it's not really okay. I have my own quirks, so it's better not to lend it to others.
(Hayashi) I kind of used it, but there are actually a lot of things to be careful about.
(Saito) Yes, most people have an easy idea of ??how to use scissors. Especially paper scissors.
(Hayashi) That's right! That's right. To be honest, I used to feel that way too before I came to learn here, and ever since I started giving private lessons, I feel that way every time.
(Saito) Most people feel that anything is fine as long as it can cut paper. Just the other day, when I was teaching at another class, a student said, "Oh, I forgot to bring the paper scissors. I'll go buy some at the 100 yen shop downstairs!" I thought that was a bit of a problem. They're so cheap, there's no way they can cut paper.
(Hayashi) You have always said in your quilt class that the paper template is more important, so the paper-cutting scissors have to be good quality.
(Saito) That's right. You have to be able to cut accurately along the lines. Some people are very sensitive and say things like, "When I sew, the stitches are off by a few millimeters," or "The pattern is a little off," but I wonder what kind of scissors they use to cut the paper templates. After all, the blades need to be thin, and the scissors need to be able to cut neatly along the lines. When I lend out these paper cutters at workshops, most people say, "Wow, the sharpness is by far superior!" You might not know this until you try them, but they're quite good.
(Hayashi) Even during my private lessons, people says "Wow!" after using these scissors. I start by talking about how to use different scissors depending on the purpose, and while they're interested in cutting fabric, they don't seem to be very interested in cutting paper. So when I lend them the scissors and ask them to try them out, most people are surprised.
(Saito) Yes, right? Absolutely. Sharpness is especially important for paper cutters. This one looks like it has a thick blade, but the tip is actually very thin. Thinner than a fabric cutter. To be honest, it's fine to use it to cut a fabric. Use it as a fabric cutter at first, and when it loses its sharpness, it's perfectly fine to use it as a paper cutter.
(Hayashi) That's right. I'll make sure to use them properly and handle them with care. Thank you for today. (End)
